The Self Development Junkie - why you’re not getting the results you want

Uncategorized Aug 31, 2020

I was talking with a lovely fellow at a Bob Proctor Seminar and I asked him if this was his first one. He was GA and seemed a bit insecure of himself, so I just assumed he was new into the self development world. You know how you can just sense a person’s sate.

He laughed and proudly said, “No way. I’ve been coming to these seminars for years.” I also found out that he attended many other seminars, has read many many books, had been writing his affirmations with his left hand (he was right handed) every day for the past 350 some days, and he was enrolled in different self development programs as well.

So of course I then wanted to know the incredible transformation that he must have been through. The goals achieved. The new business, the partner, the health victory. The dreams that had come true.

Again I was wrong. He went on to explain that nothing much had changed. He was still struggling to get his business to that next level, money was still tight, and just from my observation I could see that he lacked confidence.

How could this be? With all the things he was reading, attending and listening too, shouldn’t there be a massive shift?

My experience in the Bob Proctor year long coaching program was a dramatic shift. My income went up ten fold, I created a new confident self image, began teaching, training and leading others, started traveling, started multiple sources of income flowing, created a whole new circle of successful friends and colleagues and much more. What was different about me and others that experience so much change in a relatively short period of time into self development - and those that seem to get very little results over a long period of time? One is a Self development junkie and one is not.

First let me define the word Junkie.

According to Merriam-Webster “a Junkie is a person who gets an unusual amount of pleasure from or has an unusual amount of interest in something.” They have a substance abuse problem which involves constant consuming and dependancy without contribution or healthy creation.

Someone is a Self development Junkie when they are only consuming and not applying what they learn. Here are some questions to ask to see if you are in fact a self development junkie.

  1. Do you place more value on how many books you have read rather than on the tools and teachings within them that you have actually applied and what you’ve created.
  2. Do you use reading books, watching seminars, taking programs, listening to audios as a way to avoid doing things that actually progress you towards your goals?
  3. Do you feel consuming self development is the same as taking action?
  4. Do you know everything there is to know about affirmations, gratitude, visualization, meditation, but don’t actually use affirmations, feel grateful, visualize with emotion or meditate regularly?
  5. Do you use self help books and videos to motivate you and get you on a high? This is just like someone that abuses drugs. They depend on it to feel good but without it they crash.
  6. Do you utilize self help as a leisure activity? What I mean is at the end of the day do you crash on the couch with some popcorn and watch youtube videos of the latest gurus all night or casually read self help as a way to fill time?
  7. Do you discuss self help without actually applying it? You may ask questions on teachers’ facebook lives or make comments within their courses but don’t actually take what they say and implement it for yourself.
  8. Do you ever feel overwhelmed because you feel there is not enough time to consume all the books, courses, audios, live calls, webinars, and take the actual action towards your goals?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions you may very well be a self development junkie. But there is good news! You don’t have to stay that way. The first step is becoming aware of this. A lot of junkies never get that far. They are still in denial that they have a problem.

What I would suggest is to take a self development fast.

The shock!

The horror!

Yes, you heard me correct. Take a break from consumption. Rather than spending several hours reading and listening to books and programs, take 30 minutes and do an action on something that you’ve read recently. That could be a 20 minute meditation, a walk in nature feeling grateful for how many blessings are in your life, diving deep emotionally into visualizing your goal achieved. OR writing out a business plan, messaging 10 people about a business opportunity, going to the gym, creating a social media plan for the next month, recording a video, or starting a project you’ve been putting off.

The action can be small but it gets the rusty, gummed up gears moving. As they get moving things may seem slow and difficult at first but then the momentum picks up and the dirt and rust start flying off the gears and before you know things are moving in an easy and effortless way with exponential results.

Remember, massive, scary, crazy action is not what is required. Rather, small, consistent action over time is what will really get you to where you want to go. Just a little every day will take you far beyond what you thought possible.

You would be better off reading one page from a book and applying what it teaches every day for 7 days than spending hours a day consuming self development content with no action.

I’m here to help and support you.

Honestly I get really tired of seeing beautiful souls with wonderful dreams and desires spinning their wheels, getting no where. This is a big issue for many and the action isn’t happening. Whether it’s from lack of confidence, limiting beliefs or setting goals that aren’t actually want you really desire…things just aren’t working.

I have created a Reality Hacker Workbook which is heavily weighted on implementation of information rather than just consumption. I help and support you to take the action on your dreams that comes from inspiration and a place of love so that it manifests effortlessly without stress and struggle.
